Financial & Planning Caregivers Support for Caregivers · June 22, 2026 · 5 min read · By American Allied Health
Our caregiver compensation program generates more phone calls than everything else we do combined — and the same seven questions come up every week. Here they are, answered the way we'd answer on the phone.
1. "Is this real? It sounds too good to be true."
It's real, and it's been South Carolina policy for years. Medicaid's CLTC waiver programs recognize that home care from family costs the state far less than nursing home placement — so they allow eligible participants' care hours to be delivered by qualifying relatives, employed and paid through an enrolled agency like ours. It's not a grant or a stipend; it's a job, with a paycheck, doing what you already do.
2. "Who has to qualify — me or my mom?"
Both, but differently. Your loved one must qualify for Medicaid CLTC services (a financial test plus a needs assessment showing they require help with daily activities). You must pass a background check and complete our paid training — no prior certification needed.
3. "Can spouses be paid caregivers?"
This is the one answer we won't oversimplify: spouse eligibility depends on the specific program and current state rules, which change periodically. Call us at (803) 661-9072 and we'll give you the accurate, current answer for your exact situation rather than a blog post's guess.
4. "How much would I make?"
Pay depends on the hours Medicaid authorizes and current program rates. During a free consultation we'll tell you exactly what your situation would produce — real numbers, not ranges. What we can say broadly: for caregivers already providing this care unpaid, it's meaningful money for zero additional work.
5. "How long until the first paycheck?"
The honest answer: it depends on where your loved one starts. Already enrolled in CLTC with an authorization? Onboarding can move in weeks. Needs to apply for Medicaid from scratch? The eligibility process takes longer — which is exactly why we help families start the paperwork now rather than when there's a crisis.
6. "What does the agency actually do, if I'm the one caregiving?"
We're your employer: payroll and taxes, workers' comp, required training, supervision visits, all Medicaid billing and compliance — plus backup coverage from our respite caregivers when you're sick or need a break. Solo caregivers burn out; employed caregivers have a bench behind them.
7. "What if we don't qualify?"
Then you'll know, for free, in one phone call — and we'll tell you what your options actually are, whether that's a future application, VA benefits, or targeted private-pay hours. Families who assume they won't qualify are wrong often enough that we always say the same thing: let us check.
